During the last decade the Graphic Design field has attracted growing attention in the Arab world. We witness the uprising of professional Graphic Design and its influence on the contemporary Arabic visual culture in commercial, social, cultural and governmental sectors.

Yet the characteristics of Graphic Design is shifting as well. The traditional role of form-giving or art-direction has expanded, influenced by the societal and technological shifts. Today we see the Graphic Designer as an interface between many disciplines, including several positions in which the Graphic Designer can act as a:

Researcher, Consultant, Information Designer, Brand Designer, Game Designer, UX designer, Educator, Artist, Editor, Curator, Entrepreneur, Publisher, Event Designer and Type Designer to name a few.

The conference discussed current and future influences on the roles of Graphic Designers, plus it challenges what Arabic Graphic Designers are facing:

  • What are the core qualities/skills of the Graphic Designer?
  • How are they influenced by a changing technological and social environment?
  • What are the specific conditions in the Arab world?
  • What are the expectations and needs in the commercial, social, cultural and governmental sector?
  • What are the capabilities and limitations within a multi- and interdisciplinary working environment?
